Saving the ANC from collapse


The ANC has a problem with its business model. Having entered the era of power sharing, its system of patronage has become difficult to implement.

Ironically, the best idea coming out of the ANC’s introspection is to use its state power to deliver services. (Literally, their best idea is to do their job). The plan is to do this at provincial and municipal level where the ANC still has majorities and can claim credit.

Another good idea, that we can all get behind, is a proposal to recall non-performing mayors and counselors.

Lastly, another inspired idea is to fix the quality of ANC membership, which has per former president Mbeki “deteriorated to an alarming degree, in good measure because of the entry into its ranks of careerists, who don’t believe in the values and policies of the party”.
