Municipalities: Lost in the Maze of Rising Costs and Failing Services
The once-promising vision of municipalities as catalysts for social upliftment, conceived in 1998, has been all but forgotten. Today, they are more concerned with self-preservation and inflated budgets than serving their constituents.
Ratepayers are bearing the brunt of this mismanagement, as municipalities relentlessly increase rates and fees to fund lavish rewards for employees and unnecessary expansions. The escalating costs of essential services, coupled with poor quality, have pushed many residents to the brink.
The decline in service quality has created a vicious cycle. As more people seek alternatives like solar power and rainwater harvesting, municipalities are forced to raise rates further to compensate for lost revenue. This unsustainable trajectory threatens the financial stability of both municipalities and ratepayers.
Ratepayers Revolt is calling for a radical shift. Municipalities must return to their core mission of providing affordable services and implement urgent cost-cutting measures. This includes freezing hiring, enforcing debt collection, eliminating unnecessary expenses, and cracking down on corruption.
Ndlambe ratepayers can play a crucial role by signing the Ratepayers Revolt petition and actively engaging with their local council. Together, we can demand accountability and restore the trust between municipalities and their communities.
